Memory matching games, really? 04/25/2012
Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone each have a wide variety of image matching games such as Kids Memory. The script goes like this - tap one tile, tap another one, and if the two images match they remain uncover until the end of the game. If this is all, you may ask, why should I bother installing it, and why would my child play the game? From our experience, children enjoy these games for several reasons. First, there is the excitement of discovering new images and sounds when the child taps a tile for the first time. Second, the sense of control when the child knowingly taps the same tile over and over; not because he is trying to find the matching picture, but because the picture that appeared last time will appear this time as well. Last, the excitement of actually finding a pair of matching images, and the pleasure of hearing the “bravo” from a nearby parent. Raking up points is not a priority for a 3yo or a 4yo, so if you are the developer for the game and are developing for children in that age range, you may save yourself the effort and not count points.
